Future Self Avatars + Positive Financial Habits
Seeing ourselves as elders via age-progressed avatars can increase our savings habits and inspire future self-care.
Americans are not saving enough for their retirement, and this issue is becoming more pressing as Medicare and Social Security, which have historically helped bridge financial gaps in old age, are projected to become unavailable by the 2030s. The current financial habits of Americans lack the practice of saving adequately for later life, according to social and behavioral economists.
A significant factor contributing to this issue is the challenge of envisioning our future selves. It's often difficult to imagine the person we'll become at 80 years old, making it harder for individuals under the age of 80 to grasp the importance of preparing for that future.
People may fail, through a lack of belief or imagination, to identify with their future selves.
A suggested remedy to this predicament is to see our future self-image and thus be able to imagine more effectively, building a life for this person. The use of graphic design and avatars coupled with virtual reality software is making this available to people. They are called “aged-progressed renderings”.
